Engineers from Dell Technologies join Fudan classrooms

Industry-education cooperation allows students to gain hands-on experience of problem-solving in real scenarios.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) worldwide has brought massive changes to every industry. Across universities, educators are racking their brains on how to align what is taught in class with industrial development and how students can transform the theories they have learned into a tangible product.

In fact, Fudan has made multiple attempts to integrate AI with traditional subjects, including the latest one jointly offered by the Dell Technologies and Fudan faculty on Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS), a hot research area in automotive AI industry. This course actually helps students transform what they think and learn into reality through hands-on practice. The first offline lecture of this course was held on October 11.

This session, lectured by an ADAS Engineer from Dell Technologies, was on how to assemble an intelligent car. Students, divided into groups, were required to complete this task through teamwork. They had acquired basic ADAS knowledge in previous online lessons, while hands-on experience could examine what they had learned before and solve the problems they once neglected.

“I think the course features practical training. We have a chance to apply what we’ve learned in class and optimize the algorithm to improve the performance of the car,” said Tian Fengshi, a student attending this course who expressed his keen interest in this technology.

What do students think about this course?

The hands-on practice is an effective complement to the theoretical study, with Dell introducing its frontier resources and experience to students, which exemplifies the university’s effort in strengthening education in AI-assisted engineering, said Hu Bo, professor at School of Information Science and Technology, Fudan University.

To ensure quality lectures, Dell engineers and experts have been invited to guide students in both theoretical and practical study. “We’re looking forward to cultivating more interdisciplinary talents with profound knowledge and strong hands-on skills,” said Sun Wenqian from Dell Technologies.
