    History

The Department of Materials Science at Fudan University is one of the earliest engineering departments in China's comprehensive universities. In 1982, the Institute of Materials Science was established by integrating the fundamental areas in materials science from the disciplines of chemistry and physics. In March 1986, the Department of Materials Science was formally founded and made directly subordinated to Fudan University. After 30 years of sustained effort, the materials science research program has achieved a high reputation internationally.

It is worthy to note that Fudan's Materials Physics and Chemistry has been selected as one of the key disciplines of the Shanghai Municipality, while Material Science and Engineering as one of the priority disciplines within the municipality's development plan.

    Faculty

The Department of Materials Science has a highly competitive faculty with a wealth of accumulated academic expertise capable of generating a multitude of innovative research projects. The department is home to 81 faculty members and staff, including 31 professors and 35 associate professors. According to the statistics by the end of 2018, 75% of full-time teachers are national or provincial titled talents. Six professors are editorial board members or associate editors in more than ten well-acknowledged international journals, such as Scientific Reports, Langmuir, Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, Engineering Failure Analysis, etc.

    Research

    Research Directions

Our scientific research focuses mainly on advanced functional materials and their utilization in high-tech fields. The research directions can be categorized into functional polymer materials and practical applications, advanced optoelectronic and energy storage materials, material failure analysis and device reliability, and optical fibers and devices.

    Research Platforms

In support of the research initiatives, the department of materials science owns several provincial- and ministerial-level scientific research platforms including the National Analysis Center for Microelectronic Materials and Components, the Advanced Coatings Research Center of the Ministry of Education of China, the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Research Center for Electronic and Optoelectronic Materials and Device Analysis Technology.

    Research Projects

In the past five years, the faculty of the Department of Materials Science has undertaken and completed 457 scientific research projects including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and other projects commissioned by enterprises and institutions. More than 700 SCI papers were published and more than 130 national patents were granted.

    Talents Cultivation

Our students are equipped with solid theoretical and cross-disciplinary knowledge, strong in critical thinking and analyzing, and able to independently conduct academic research. We have made distinctive talent cultivation achievements through our “Undergraduate Academic Research” and “General Education Curriculum” programs. A number of our alumni are playing leading roles in academia and industry both at home and abroad.

    Domestic and International Impact

According to the 2015 ESI Global Discipline Ranking and QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016, our materials discipline ranked No. 41 (top 0.1%) and No. 40 in the world, respectively. As reported by the U.S. News College Ranking, our discipline ranked No. 2 and No. 3 around the globe in 2014 and 2015, respectively. In 2017, “Materials Science and Engineering” was listed in the national “Double First-rate construction discipline. Up to now, our research output has been successfully applied in electronic component analysis, materials failure analysis, advanced coatings, and public security, resulting in substantial contributions to our society.
